I Tickled a Manatee’s Armpit.
And I think I saw him giggle.
I am so in love. In November, I’m not voting for the candidate with the best economic plan, but the one who’ll promise to SAVE THE MANATEES. After traveling a looong 6 hours on the way from Miami to TX, we stopped in Crystal River, FL so we could wake up the next morning at 5:30am and swim with the Manatees.
In the lake at 7am with a warm rain falling on my back, swimming between Darwin and a live manatee was an experience that rates right up there with being born.
The captain/guide/camerawoman filmed the entire dive. Some highlights: @ :45 me getting sidelined by a small boy, @ 1:20 the small boy’s father stepping on a manatee, @ 2:10 a baby manatee nursing, @ 2:20 the swim to freshwater springs, @ 3:40 one long-necked turtle.

Or how about the highlight at 0:55, Darwin in a GLORIOUS, dripping wet, skin-tight wetsuit.

I actually read your new title, ‘i tickled a manatee’s armpit’ and thought:
1. great, she’s telling the world i’m ticklish
2. wait, what is she calling me these days?

That made my day! Joe will love this–he hates it when people swim with dolphins ’cause they’re actually mean and we just think they’re nice ’cause they look like they’re smiling…but with manatees you have no idea if they’re smiling or not, but they’re kind of acting nice. Anyway, FUN TIMES!

I love the concern Lytle has when the boy runs into her, way to take care of yourself! Also, Darwin’s comments had me cracking up. When are you two in Austin again?

wasn’t it cool that I automatically thought “sting ray” when you told me you were going to swim with the manatees and I cautioned you against it…….yeah…..embarrassing.

So Brittney, they’re actually REALLY nice animals… and what we’re doing is training them not to be afraid of boats and humans so that when speeding motorboats come by, they think “friends” and then get sliced by the sharp, swirling blades. But to counteract our negative karma, I am making SAVE THE MANATEES stickers to put on people’s bumpers (or backsides) at the RNC.
Austin soon? I hope so… I love that city - but I must ask, can it really compare to College Station, home of the people of the Aggies? um…. can’t wait to get back to Austin again.
And Sophia, I do remember that… it was awesome. I love you!
